Shaping Leaders Driving Results

The Carolina Center for Competitive Economies (C3E) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill invites applicants for the Associate Director for Research position. The Center, a part of the Frank Hawkins Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise and UNC's Kenan-Flagler Business School conducts economic policy studies for local, state, and national governments across a spectrum of economic development issues. The Center's core competencies include developing and deploying econometric and industry clusters analysis to examine issues of economic competitiveness. The Associate Director for Research will assist in the coordination and management of research activities for the Center under the primary policy direction and supervision of the Center Director and secondary policy direction of the Senior Research Director. This position will help generate new projects to advance the Center s research agenda, coordinate and supervise graduate students in the application of regional models, and assist in the daily management of sponsored research projects. This position is currently 80% FTE (with benefits). It could become 100% FTE with an increase in the level of the Center's funded research activities. The Associate Director for Research will play a key role in generating new projects to initiate this change.

Education Requirements:

Master's degree required, PhD degree preferred, in Business, Economics, Planning, Public Administration, Regional Science, or a related field.

Qualifications and Experience:

Three to five years experience is preferred. The Associate Director for Research should possess 1) familiarity with IMPLAN, industry cluster analysis, impact models, econometrics, and other tools of regional economic development research, 2) an understanding of the relevant economic development literature and experience/training in both qualitative and quantitative research approaches, 3) excellent writing ability, knowledge and experience with grant writing, and good interpersonal skills, and 4) must be able to interact comfortably with prospective clients, including local and state government leaders and understand how the corporate world functions. Experience and desire to publish academic research in the field of economic development is preferred.
