Senior or Principal Water Resources Planner

Senior Water Resources Planner: salary range $49,085 to $70,123 ($46,748 hiring rate)
Principal Water Resources Planner: salary range $54,117 to $77,310 ($51,540 hiring rate)

The Triangle J Council of Governments (TJCOG), a regional planning organization serving the Research Triangle Region of North Carolina, seeks an experienced planner to work on water resources and watershed issues. The successful candidate must have a positive, customer-focused orientation and be able to deliver high-quality products in a timely manner.


Description of Work
The senior water resources planner will be part of the regional planning team. In this role, the person will work with other TJCOG planning and GIS staff and with staff in local governments and other regional agencies to manage area water resources and watersheds. Work will focus on water supply planning and management, including watershed protection. The work will include providing staff support for various committees, conducting analyses, developing plans and reports, and project management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
The planner must be knowledgeable of federal and state laws and policies affecting water resources and of tools and techniques to manage water resources. Excellent research and synthesis skills are required. Excellent communication (writing, speaking), interpersonal, and consensus-building skills are imperative in this position, as well as the ability to understand different perspectives and to identify creative solutions. The person must be self-motivated, diligent, and able to work with limited direct supervision. Experience with ESRI geographic information systems (GIS) will be highly desirable, as will an understanding of water quality and hydrologic modeling. The ability to use Microsoft word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software is required.

Training and Experience Requirements
A master’s degree in regional planning, environmental management, or related field, and three years of experience in water resources planning; or graduation from a four-year college or university with a major in engineering, environmental science, natural resources or related field and five years experience in water resources planning work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Exceptional candidates with experience well above the requirements will be considered for the Principal Water Resources Planner position.
