Graduate Student Assistant Position Available

The National Center for Safe Routes to School, which assists communities in enabling and encouraging children to safely walk and bike to school, seeks an energetic and motivated graduate student to support and contribute to the Center’s research and practice activities.

Job Description: The position will work with Center staff on multiple activities. Responsibilities may include: compiling training materials, developing and writing text and material such as tip sheets, case studies for the Center’s Web site (http://www.saferoutesinfo.org/) and conducting literature reviews. The position also will work on tasks related to International Walk to School Day (http://www.walktoschool.org/) including assisting with online registration and the analysis and reporting on survey results. This position is practice-focused, not academic research. The position is 10-12 hours per week with a flexible schedule within regular business hours beginning in fall semester 2008 with possible continuation into spring semester and summer 2009.

Job Requirements: Graduate students from planning, public health, journalism, geography, and other relevant disciplines are encouraged to apply. The position requires excellent writing and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of Safe Routes to School, school-related transportation, built environment and physical activity, health-related issues and/or walking and bicycling issues preferred, but not required.

Salary: $16 / hr for 1st year graduate students; $17 / hr for 2nd year graduate students

About the Center: The National Center for Safe Routes to School is part of the UNC Highway Safety Research Center. Established in May 2006, the National Center for Safe Routes to School provides technical assistance and support to State SRTS Programs and assists communities in enabling and encouraging children to safely walk and bike to school. The Center aims to provide Safe Routes to School programs with the knowledge and technical information to implement safe and successful strategies. As part of its work, it also acts as the national coordinator for International Walk to School Day in the USA.
