Southern Pines Internship

We are interested in hiring an intern to staff our field office in Southern Pines.

The Town of Southern Pines is updating its comprehensive plan, employing a process that will involve continuous and effective community participation to ensure the plan includes community supported policies and implementation actions. To that end, the Town has asked that we establish a planning “drop-in” center to encourage public access to the process and celebrate the entire planning effort. This “drop-in” center will feature a project gallery (displaying project information in visual form for community reference) and an ad hoc design studio (allowing members of the public to sketch their ideas for Southern Pines’ future). The center will also host occasional planning events to which the community will be invited during the course of the process.

We are looking for an intern with solid interpersonal skills and a predisposition to citizen involvement to staff the center for up to 20 hours per week. The assignment will likely begin in August 2008 and run through May 2009.

The intern will have direct contact with the public and will have an opportunity to shape and influence Southern Pines’ policy and design environment. The intern may also have the opportunity to work on other planning projects as assigned, directed by the consulting team based in Spokane, WA and Atlanta, GA.

Salary for this assignment is negotiable. It is imperative that we find the appropriate, conscientious, self-starting individual to help with this project. It will provide professional-level experience that will be invaluable in future career decisions and placements.
