CLIENT: Founded in 2002, NextEnergy (NE) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that capitalized a $30.0 million seed grant from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation. With an initial charge to implement an economic development strategy for the State of Michigan to accelerate research, development and manufacturing of Alternative Energy Technologies (AET), they continue to advance the AET industry in Michigan. The NE Center opened in 2005 and is located near Detroit's Wayne State University campus. POSITION: CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
REPORTS TO: BOARD OF DIRECTORS
SUPERVISES: Senior leadership team.
EDUCATION: A Bachelors Degree in an engineering or technology field
preferred. MBA or advanced degree preferred.
RESPONSIBILITIES: In conjunction with the Board of Directors, responsible for establishing and modifying, as necessary, the strategic direction of NE. In conjunction with the Board of Directors and senior staff, responsible for meeting annual revenue goals and assuring sound financial management. Managing the senior staff of NE and establishing a dynamic culture within the organization. Serving as the external spokesperson for NE around the US
and the world, advancing the mission and reputation of NE through public speaking engagements and private meetings with policymakers, legislators, corporations and others. Serving as the lead interface for NE with Federal agencies and legislators in order to maximize appropriate funding of NE’s activities in advancing its mission. Leading NE’s relationship with State legislators and agencies, including the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, in order to advance the State of Michigan’s success in the energy field. Leading NE’s relationship with local economic development organizations and businesses throughout Michigan, in order to advance regional success in the energy field.
WORK EXPERIENCE: 10+ years experience in leadership and management positions, enhancing the profitability, growth and success of an organization. Experience with start-up and emerging companies and markets. Knowledge of economic development policies and methodologies. Broad market, business and technical knowledge in energy and alternative energy systems. Knowledge and appreciation for concept of sustainability as a business model (triple bottom line – economic, social, environmental responsibility). Experience dealing with federal and state governmental agencies. Proven ability to identify and capture new business opportunities to establish market presence and increase revenues. Significant experience identifying and securing new capital for the growth of NE’s mission. Significant public speaking experience. Passion for NE’s mission, including the long-term growth of the State of Michigan. Experience conducting business nationally and internationally a plus.
PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS: Sensitivity to people, self-confidence and management skills needed to lead a dedicated staff. Excellent written and verbal communication skills; a fluid speaking style and a “presence” in a public setting. Ability to explain complex ideas across various constituency groups. Strong comfort level and highly confident in soliciting contributions or support from potential donors.
TRAVEL: Overnight travel in the range of 10-15%.
LOCATION: Detroit, Michigan
RELOCATION: Relocation costs, if required, in accordance with NE ’s policies.
ANNUAL: Salary and benefits highly competitive and commensurate with experience and qualifications. Compensation package includes base pay, incentive-based bonus and car allowance.
