APA seeks a planner to join its AICP and research teams in its Washington, DC office to help develop educational programs for AICP and to manage APA's new Planning and Community Health Research Center. The position requires education and experience in urban and regional planning plus knowledge about the community health benefits of sound planning. Candidates must demonstrate well-developed research, writing, and presentation skills, as well as the ability to collaborate effectively with in-house colleagues and with outside academics and practitioners, NGOs and government agencies. The position offers an opportunity for a highly motivated professional with a high standard of excellence to be involved in the full panoply of planning issues in the U.S. in an exciting, collegial atmosphere.


Candidates should demonstrate an ability to develop programs and projects from conception to final implementation. The position will assist with, develop, or manage training activities, including distance learning products. Candidates should also demonstrate knowledge of the complex relationships that exists between urban planning and community health, including physical activity, nutrition, clean water and air, and other community attributes.

Candidates must have a Masters Degree or Doctorate in planning or a closely related field, plus at least one to three years experience in planning. A duel degree in planning and public health is preferred. AICP designation is preferred, or without AICP, a commitment to attain certification within 18 months of hire date. Candidates must possess:

o excellent critical thinking and analytical skills
o well developed writing, speaking, and interpersonal skills;
o excellent customer service skills;
o an ability to develop and manage complex projects or programs;
o experience with progressive and innovative planning concepts and tools;
o broad, well-rounded experience with a wide variety of planning disciplines
o special skills in one or several areas, including planning for community health
o team player
o demonstrated excellence in achievement
