Intern Announcement – League of Women Voters of North Carolina

The League of Women Voters, a nonpartisan political organization, has worked since 1920 to improve government and impact public policies through citizen education and advocacy. The League works at the national, state and local levels. The League is strictly nonpartisan; it neither supports nor opposes candidates for office. At the same time, the League is wholeheartedly political and influences policy through advocacy. It is a grassroots citizen network, directed by the consensus of its members.

The League of Women Voters of North Carolina is seeking an intern to fill a part-time, paid position during the 2008 legislative session of the North Carolina General Assembly which is scheduled to begin on May 13, 2008. The task of this person will be to compose and distribute by email to League members a weekly update of the League's priority issues being considered in the General Assembly. In addition the person will send action alerts notifying the League members of strategic times to contact their legislators. Our priorities are specific issues in the areas of campaign and election reform, the environment, health care, tax reform, redistricting, and aging.

The intern may compile the weekly update by collecting information shared by compatible organizations. The intern would not have to actually attend committee and legislative sessions in order to collect the necessary information.

Candidates should be graduate students in public policy, planning, public administration or a related social science field. Experience in conducting timely and thorough web-based research is essential. Excellent writing skills are necessary. The League is offering $15/hour for up to 5 hours of work per week through the duration of the 2008 session.

Interested applicants should send a cover letter and resume by April 1, 2008 to Beverly Kawalec, 111 Laurel Hill Circle, Chapel Hill, NC 27514, or by email to bevkawalec@bellsouth.net (phone 919-942-6396.)
