UNC Energy Services Internship

The Energy Services Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is seeking qualified internship candidates to assist with input and updates of campus utility Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping. The Energy Services Department is comprised of Chilled Water, Cogeneration, Electric Distribution, and a Water, Wastewater, and Stormwater Group.

Summer intern position available May 12, 2008 – August 14, 2008 Monday - Friday, 8 am-5 pm (with flexibility for summer class schedules)

Description of Work: Gather existing utility records for input into GIS.
Perform on-screen digitizing to capture utility systms in the GIS database. Perform field checks on campus to verify accuracy of information and collect additional attributes. Utilize Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to collect GIS data. Work closely with GIS staff and utility engineers to verify system connectivity.

Qualifications: Minimum of a high school diploma and some college coursework. Knowledge of GIS and GPS principles and applications (preferred). Experience using ESRI ArcGIS or similar package (preferred). Ability to read construction plans and maps. Experience using Microsoft Office software (MS Word, Excel, Access). Ability to effectively work as part of a team. Strong communication skills are required. Must be able to work outside and participate in moderate physical activities such as walking in difficult terrain, bending to measure underground structures, and removing structure lids (if possible). Must maintain a valid North Carolina driver’s license. The following skills are a plus: Experience using CADD software and reading utility drawings. Experience with field data collection and GPS equipment.
