Planner 1

The Lancaster County Planning Department is now accepting resumes for the position of Planner 1. The county is located immediately to the south of Charlotte, North Carolina, which has a population of 1.6 million. Lancaster County’s population is 73,000 which includes the City of Lancaster’s population of 8,400. The county is primarily rural. However, the county’s close proximity to Charlotte has served to attract new commercial and industrial development, as well as, a large amount of residential development, primarily to the northern part of the county.

The person filling this position will be part of the team which is responsible for 1) conducting all planning activities taking place in the county and in two of the three municipalities located within the county; 2) providing staff support to the Planning Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, county council and two municipal councils; 3) dealing with the public on a daily basis; 4) reviewing and approving subdivision applications and plans and 5) writing and presenting staff reports to the various groups listed in #2, above.

The successful candidate must have as a minimum a four year degree in planning or related field with an emphasis on current planning. Master’s degree and some experience is preferred. Additionally, excellent public speaking skills and the ability to write well and meet tight deadlines is required. Knowledge of GIS is a requirement. Salary is negotiable.

This is a small department which needs a highly motivated person to help with the workload and to develop regulations on a wide range of planning issues. This department is trying to put in place regulations to deal with the future development of the county.
