Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Program Officer

The Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation is a private foundation with a mission to improve the quality of the lives of the people of North Carolina. The Foundation was established in 1936 as a memorial to Z. Smith Reynolds, the youngest son of R. J. Reynolds. Since that time it has been engaged in progressive grantmaking in North Carolina. The current focus areas of the Foundation’s grantmaking are Community Economic Development, Democracy and Civic Engagement, Environment, Pre-Collegiate Education, and Social Justice and Equity.

This Program Officer will work on a team with another Program Officer to provide services in the Foundation’s focus areas of Community Economic Development and Social Justice and Equity. The position includes analyzing grant applications, helping grantees build organizational capacity, developing effective strategies for the Foundation to facilitate positive change, and evaluating the effectiveness of the Foundation’s past grantmaking. All final grant decisions are made by the Trustees of the Foundation.

Requirements: Must have a Bachelors Degree or higher. Must have excellent analytic, critical and strategic thinking, organizational, writing and communications skills. Must be deeply committed to the values of the Foundation. Must be able to work well in a team, value diversity, work well with people of various cultural, ethnic, geographic and economic backgrounds, and be able to work under pressure and meet deadlines. Experience in economic development, commitment to or knowledge of the State of North Carolina, capacity to do research and data analysis, and a good working knowledge of current information technology are preferred. Humility, curiosity, self confidence and a sense of humor are desirable traits.
