Position Recruitment: Green Building Intern, Summer 2008
About the Office of Sustainable Development
The City of Portland Office of Sustainable Development (OSD) was established in 2000 to provide leadership and support practical solutions to improve the environmental, social and economic health of Portland. OSD delivers policy and programs that integrate efforts related to green building, energy efficiency, renewable resources, waste reduction and recycling, global warming and sustainable food systems.
Project Background
Two separate efforts shape the scope of work for this position. In 2002, The Office of Sustainable Development released Creating a High Performance Workspace, the nation’s first resource guide focused on encouraging the design and construction of healthy, productive, energy efficient tenant improvements(TI). Six years later, the Guide is still actively used, but many of the resources and strategies need to be
updated to reflect new performance benchmarks and program goals. Learn more about the Guide here:

Recently, Portland City Council adopted the Portland Recycles! Plan that includes recommendations to reduce construction, remodeling and demolition waste (CR&D) and achieve higher levels of recycling at construction projects. To help the construction industry meet these new requirements, OSD will provide guidance, informational resources and technical assistance in the field. Toward that end, OSD is forming
a Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) of industry and policy professionals to provide input on the development of best management practices, technical assistance, project compliance and industry outreach strategies. Learn more about the Portland Recycles! Plan here:

Position Responsibilities
The intern would be responsible for researching, updating and editing the original TI Guide. Deliverables include draft text and web links for two versions of the Guide; one condensed for printing, the other available on our website. The intern would also be responsible for providing staff support for the CR&D Technical Advisory
Committee (TAC). Tasks include scheduling meetings and preparing agendas, conducting research and developing background materials. The intern would be expected to attend the TAC meetings as well.
Qualifications
Candidates must be legally eligible to work in the United States. The ideal candidate will have:
Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple tasks;
Excellent research, writing and editing skills;
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to represent OSD professionally on the phone and in person;
Computer competency, including the ability to use standard e-mail, word processing, spreadsheet, and internet browser software; and
Enthusiasm for green building, waste prevention and the mission of OSD.
Compensation and Duration
The position is approximately 32 hours a week, starting in mid-June. The position will remain available until the projects are complete. Salary is $15/hour without benefits.
Application Process
To apply, submit a résumé of no more than two pages with a cover letter to OSD by 12:00 PM on Monday, June 2, 2008 to Alisa Kane at akane@ci.portland.or.us. The City of Portland is an equal opportunity employer. Diversity is a core value of both OSD and the City of Portland. Minorities, women, and individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
